If you are worried about Chevy Volt battery safety, you are not alone. Capitol Chevrolet Cadillac, however, has a with a few pieces of information to share that should help put your mind at ease.
The Chevy Volt, known for the highest level of consumer satisfaction (according to a recent study by Consumer Reports), is under a safety investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This investigation was trigger by an extremely small percentage of fire outbreaks stemming from the Volt's li-ion battery, shortly after a safety crash test. Of course, any evidence of a fire outbreak is enough to warrant an investigation - not only by the NHTSA but also by the auto manufacturer on what they can do to remedy the situation.
In spite of the investigation, the "NHTSA continues to believe that electric vehicles have incredible potential to save consumers money at the pump, help protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil." 1, also stating it had no reports of fires from real-world crashes.
To address drivers concerns, Chevrolet, parent company, General Motors, has offered loaner cars to drivers who feel that their Volt might be at risk following an accident. They've even gone so far as to buy vehicles back. Though few owners have taken GM up on these offers, the actions speaks loudly of their commitment to keeping drivers safe at any costs.
In the same time, Chevrolet is considering various options to fixes the Volt battery, including: reinforcing the more at-risk components of the battery and laminating in-battery circuitry, measures to prevent coolant from leaking in the event of an crash, whether minor fender bender or head-on collision. In addition to corrective measures, Chevrolet is also currently analyzing data to determine whether a global recall is needed or if the imminent fix can be implemented only in batteries currently manufactured at its factory in Brownstown Township, Michigan. Action steps and respective time frames are expected to be announced shortly, for the measures expecting to cost Chevrolet close to $1000 per car.
Until a final decision is reached by GM, feel free to contact Capitol Chevrolet Cadillac with any questions or concerns regarding the Volt. Or, stop by and see us in person at 2711 Mission Street SE, Salem, OR, 97302.
