As you back your car out of its parking spot, you notice a suspicious leak on the ground underneath it. Fluids dripping from your engine can be a cause for alarm or fairly innocent. Knowing which fluid it is tells you whether to keep driving or to schedule a service visit.

  • Water is the most common fluid and is probably coming from condensation on your air conditioning unit. If you haven’t been using your air conditioner, it might be from your coolant exchange system and may need addressing.
  • Antifreeze leaks could lead to your engine overheating and are toxic to animals.
  • Engine oil leaks indicate a problem with a seal. Over time, the leak can worsen and the fix becomes more expensive. Addressing it early can avoid costly repairs and a messy driveway.
  • Brake fluid is the most alarming leak, as it could lead to brake failure.
  • If your differential is leaking, you’ll find a big pool of smelly fluid near an axel.
